How does the game codenames work?
Codenames is a game of guessing which codenames (i.e., words) in a set are related to a hint-word given by another player. Players split into two teams: red and blue. A number of these words represent red agents, a number represent blue agents, one represents an assassin, and the others represent innocent bystanders.
How do you play codenames online?
- Choose Spymasters. Each team chooses a person to be the Spymaster. Spymasters sit on the same side of the table.
- Choose Field Operatives. Rest of the team are Field Operatives. They sit across Spymasters.
- Choose Codenames (words) to place on table. Randomly choose 25 codenames. Place on table in 5 by 5 grid.
How do I set up codenames?
Every other player is an agent for their team. Shuffle the codename tiles and place 25 of them (face up ) in a 5 by 5 square. Shuffle the “key” cards and place one of the cards into the square “key” in secret from all of the agents in the game. This is the “secret key” that reveals the identities behind the codenames.
How many guesses do you get in codenames?
You are allowed only one extra guess. In the example above, the red operative would be allowed 4 guesses because her spymaster said the number 3. When the field operatives say they are done guessing (or when they guess wrong) it is the other team’s turn.
