Is Warhammer 40K hard to learn?
Assuming you mean either Age of Sigmar or Warhammer 40K, the two major supported versions, then the answer is that they are very easy to learn but hard to master. To be able to play a game you need to understand the 8 sides of A5 that constitute the basic rules. That’s about the same as any other board game.

Games Workshop “killed” the old Warhammer product because it wasn’t profitable. Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB) was a clunky beast, it required many hours of learning rules and tactics, even more hours of building and painting and then would take hours to play to boot.

As far as tabletop games (AoS) Warhammer Quest can be played single player. The “Behaviour Tables” in it might be a good starting point for an automated opponent in Kill Team or something also. Silver Tower can, with minimal fudging, be played one player if you take two heroes.
Why is Warhammer so expensive?
The reason they feel so expensive is because the games that Games Workshop supports require a large quantity of models, while companies like privateer games support games with a low count of models. As such, it is cheaper to buy an army for, say warmachine, than it is for Warhammer 40k or Age of Sigma.

To go from having nothing in 40K to having the required books, a 2,000pt army (standard size), with some hobby supplies, is $815. It’s often joked that they call the game Warhammer 40,000 because it costs $40,000 to play the game. Well, it’s not that much, but it’s not a cheap hobby either.
Why is wargaming so expensive?
It’s expensive because it’s free to play. They need to make enough money from sales to cover the cost of running the game. Console games you have to buy the game and each expansion and now most have in game purchases as well to subsidize cost of running it. I’d bet they would also make decent money with lower prices.
Where should I start with 40k?
Start with the Eisenhorn, Tanith, and Ultramarines series. Best introduction to main 40k. I guess starting with the Horus Heresy series is not a bad idea, but I think it takes away all the fun of recognizing certain things in HH. I really loved the first Grey Knight book.
